What I Learned This Week

Thanks for stopping by again! Why not stay connected by subscribing to my RSS feed.

I learned that I look like Lynda Carter, or at least, that’s what I was told this past weekend. A few of us moms and one teacher were sitting in the Student Union Building of Univ. of Idaho.  We were chaperoning a group of high school kids during the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and we were dog tired. We were so tired we were getting downright goofy. That’s when one of the mom’s said, “You know who you look like?  Lynda Carter.”

Wonder Woman? Cool!”

And that got Mrs. M., the English teacher, going on about other TV heroines. “Remember Isis?” she said.  ”I loved to watch that. I remember I would put my wrists together, twirl around and say, ‘Oh mighty Isis…’”

We went on like that for a few minutes, revisiting favorite super heroines from the 70’s. Like I said, we were all sleep-deprived (meaning we had four-to-five hours sleep, two nights in a row) and we were getting sillier by the minute.

Then I had a random thought: “I know why you think I look like her; it’s because I’m wearing this royal blue shirt.”

And the other mom, Mrs. S said, “No, no, you really do.”

Me: “It’s actually funny that you mention that because just the other night, I put on a blue tank top and red underwear and thought I could be Superwoman or something.”

Mrs. S: “That’s funny. That’s not the superhero I would pick to describe me.”

I also learned that it’s hard to be Christ-like when you’re so stinkin’ tired.  I mean, you have no patience for anything or anyone.  All you can think about is yourself, how tired you are, how badly you need a nap, how you need another caffeine fix. You don’t care if someone has to perform at 8 a.m.; it’s just downright crazy that the girls you’re rooming with start to wake up at 5 a.m. to get ready and then do vocal exercises in the shower, ensuring that you lose an extra hour or more of sleep.  It’s easier to grumble throughout the day and commiserate with the other moms about how stinkin’ tired you are.  And at 12 midnight, you don’t care whose stinkin’ car they ride in just get in the car already!

I learned that a one man show won’t put you to sleep but can be highly entertaining, at least, when that one-man show is Bobby McFerrin. This was the best evening concert by far! This man was so unusual and so outside-the-box musically, it was insane. I don’t even know how to describe it; somehow he makes it sound like there are two or three voices coming out of the mic.  I’m going to send you here to see one of the songs he performed for us; and then over here to see how he layers his voice to make his songs.  Anyway, he was totally fun and inspiring. My other favorite from the weekend was Gretchen Parlato; oh, and of course, watching my daughter and the other kids from the school perform.  Priceless, really, and worth a sleepless night anytime.

Don’t worry Mrs. S., I’m sure we can find a super heroine that is just right for you.

Wow, Wonder Woman…I wouldn’t mind looking like her. I used to pretend to be her when I was a kid.

I wonder if this is my sign? My oldest daughter is 6, and she’s fascinated with super heros. I’ve given thought to introducing her to Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman lately. ;)

You’ve got some great posts and great insights! And thanks for visiting my blog today. Come back anytime. :)

Seriously? Wonder Woman? Is that mom your new BFF now or what?

After reading your number two here, you should definitely stop back by again and check out my post from February 24th entitled “mom coping strategy #1: sleep”

If you don’t have time to read the whole thing, skip ahead to the youtube video and check out the first two minutes.

Thanks for the comment on my WILTW! And to answer your question, I’m in pricing analytics…which is a fancy term for saying I help people in my company price their product lines/service :)

Now, that is a compliment. That Wonder Woman is a hottie.

Wonder Woman? Sweet! I used to LOVE that show. And the Bionic Woman. I can see how that mom would have put the two of you together. I think it’s the long, dark, wavy hair.

Hey, thanks for the visit and the comment. To answer your question about youtube (I hope), here’s what I do:

While viewing the youtube video (or just while on that page when it’s paused or finished), I copy the code in the “Embed” box to the right (under the URL box).

This part may be different for you. I peeked at your source code and can tell you are using WordPress 2.6. I’m using hosted WordPress on wordpress.com. But - Here’s what I do - While on the edit page for a post, I switch from the “visual” tabbed view to the “HTML” tabbed view. Then I place my cursor where I want the youtube video to appear and paste.

I work in the HTML tabbed page most of the time, but you can go back to the “visual” tab after you paste the code if you’re more comfortable there. Let me know if you have any more questions, I’d be glad to help.

You’ve actually prompted me to write a how-to post about this for my Pragmatic Computing blog! So, Thanks!

I didn’t know Bobby McFerrin was still out there. How fun!

And yes, I grew up on “Oh Mighty Isis” and Electra Woman and Dyna Girl and The Bionic Woman and all that 70s stuff, too!
